Project Details

THEME : URBAN DESIGN

CATEGORY: WINTER SCHOOL

COLLABORATOR: CEPT UNIVERSITY

DATE: DECEMBER 2015

From immersive classroom discussions to on-ground interactions with experts, students delved into the city's rich history, spiritual significance, and urban challenges.

The course facilitated conversations with a wide range of stakeholders, guiding students to envision innovative design interventions that harmonize Varanasi's cultural heritage with its evolving urban landscape.

The culmination of this expedition was marked by an exhibition hosted at CEPT University. Here, students showcased their innovative solutions, offering a glimpse into their visionary designs that capture the intricate interplay between tradition and modernity, spirituality and pragmatism, heritage and progress.

This exhibition demonstrated how thoughtful design interventions can breathe new life into a city that embodies both timelessness and transition.

COURSE HIGHLIGHTS

Varanasi, with its rich history, ancient architecture, cultural tapestry, spiritual practices, handloom traditions, and iconic Ghats, holds a distinctive identity that sets it apart. The city's essence lies in its profound contrast – a juxtaposition of elements that span from its cosmic and timeless significance as a sacred space for pilgrims to the bustling urban reality of its narrow streets and spatial limitations for the local populace. Meanwhile, governmental concerns have often revolved around environmental issues, sanitation, and urban planning. These divergent facets collectively shape the Varanasi experience for residents, visitors, and government entities. Varanasi's multifaceted nature engenders competing visions and perspectives from various stakeholders.

The challenge at hand is the transformation of these contrasting concerns and visions into actionable design interventions. The task involves harmonizing Varanasi's historical heritage with the contemporary needs of its society.

METHODOLOGY

1) Identifying Design Interventions for Public Spaces and Streets:
This phase centers on the dynamic challenge of integrating historical contexts with the demands of modern society. It delves into the complex task of designing spaces that blend tradition and modernity, addressing the city's unique urban fabric.

2) Understanding Governance Limitations:
This segment emphasizes gaining a comprehensive understanding of the multidimensional aspects at play. It involves recognizing the constraints and potentials within Varanasi's governance framework, highlighting the need for adaptive design solutions that accommodate diverse perspectives.

3) Identifying the Scope of Design Intervention and Crafting Solutions:
Participants will explore the potential scope of design intervention, factoring in the collective vision of stakeholders. The culmination of this phase will be the creation of a dramatic representation, a play, or a video. This presentation will encapsulate the group's ideas, insights, challenges, and findings, presenting a holistic perspective.

4) Site Visits and Meeting with Municipal Authorities:
The course incorporates three days of on-site exploration, providing participants with firsthand insights into Varanasi's urban landscape. Meetings with local municipality representatives will serve to discuss the feasibility of proposed interventions and establish a connection between theoretical concepts and practical implementation.

5) Compilation and Presentation:
Participants will compile the information gathered and the insights gained, channeling them into a drama, play, or video presentation. This multimedia culmination will encapsulate the group's collective understanding, addressing the city's complexities from multiple viewpoints.

This course goes beyond conventional design thinking, enabling participants to envision Varanasi's transformation through the lenses of professionals, entrepreneurs, tourists, locals, politicians, and bureaucrats. The process involves:

Identifying the Cluster: Recognizing the diverse elements that define Varanasi's character.

Mapping Hierarchy and Conceptualizing Design Ideas: Creating a conceptual framework for interventions that resonate with the city's layered identity.

Three-Day Site Visit and Municipal Consultation: Immersing participants in Varanasi's urban reality and engaging in practical discussions with local authorities.

Compilation and Presentation: Synthesizing the accumulated insights and perspectives into a compelling presentation that brings the multifaceted nature of Varanasi's challenges and opportunities to life.
