THEME : URBAN GADGET

CATEGORY: PROTOTYPE

COLLABORATOR: BRIHATI FOUNDATION

DATE: NOVEMBER 2018

Amidst the prevailing scenario of Asian cities and the burgeoning informal sector sprawling across the streets, this prototype seeks to offer an accessible and cost-effective solution that not only caters to the essential needs of the vendors but also elevates the city's aesthetic allure. By addressing the challenges posed by the informal sector, this innovative concept aspires to imbue the urban landscape with a harmonious blend of functionality and visual appeal.

Gratitude goes to the skilled local fabricators of Ahmedabad Old City, whose invaluable contribution made it possible to complete both devices within a remarkably affordable budget. This collaborative effort not only exemplifies the spirit of sustainability but also celebrates the rich cultural heritage of the region, resulting in devices that are not just functional but also deeply connected to the essence of the community they serve.

The new stall design draws inspiration from the organic rhythm of daily activities and the traditional spatial arrangements observed among existing users. Embracing a sustainable ethos, the main skeleton ingeniously utilizes upcycled steel waste, infusing the structure with character and reducing its environmental footprint.

Through thoughtfully perforated shells and partitions, the stall creates an air of intrigue, allowing glimpses of the bustling activities within. The interplay of light and shadow entices passersby, inviting them to observe the captivating dance of life unfolding inside.

The choice of materials reflects both practicality and cultural sensitivity. The enclosure harmoniously combines aluminum and bamboo, melding modernity and tradition. Aluminum lends sleekness and durability, while bamboo adds warmth and a sense of heritage, creating an inviting atmosphere for visitors.

A defining feature of this stall, affectionately named "TOTORO" after the mythical forest spirit, lies in its transformable nature. During the day, it unfolds into a vibrant marketplace, alive with colors, textures, and scents, drawing people into its sensory realm.

As twilight descends, TOTORO gracefully retreats, morphing into a protective cocoon that securely stores its wares and gadgets. This nightly transformation serves as a symbolic gesture, signaling the end of the day's activities and the anticipation of a new dawn.

TOTORO stands as an embodiment of innovation converging with tradition, artistry, and sustainability. Its design seamlessly weaves past and present, redefining the boundaries of form and function, and becoming an integral part of the community's shared identity.

In crafting our design, we embarked on a meticulous examination of two well-established laris in the vibrant Dhal Ni Pol area. Our analysis delved into various aspects, including the types and sizes of utensils used, their spatial arrangement, and their usability throughout the day.

The culmination of our efforts resulted in a final prototype that serves as a testament to flexibility and practicality, tailored to address the diverse needs of street vendors. We sought to create a design that not only captures the essence of tradition but also embraces the dynamic nature of street vending.

Drawing inspiration from the rich heritage of Dhal Ni Pol, we endeavored to preserve its authenticity while integrating contemporary elements to enhance usability. The design showcases a harmonious blend of tradition and innovation, a seamless fusion that pays homage to the past while embracing the demands of the present.

Central to the concept is the adaptability of the prototype, offering street vendors a versatile platform to showcase their products and services. The stalls can be easily configured and reconfigured to accommodate various utensils, ensuring that vendors can display their wares in the most enticing and efficient manner.

Moreover, we considered the importance of optimizing the available space, and making the most of the bustling street environment. The design not only harmonizes with the existing urban landscape but also breathes new life into the surroundings, inviting visitors and locals alike to immerse themselves in the vibrant tapestry of culture and commerce.

Beyond aesthetics, functionality played a pivotal role in shaping the final prototype. A thorough understanding of the daily routines and needs of street vendors informed our decisions, ensuring that the design was not merely eye-catching but also pragmatic. From sunrise to sunset, the stalls cater to the ever-changing requirements of vendors, seamlessly adapting to different phases of the day.

In conclusion, our design journey led us to a prototype that honors the spirit of tradition, celebrates the dynamic nature of street vending, and embraces the aspirations of the local community. By deeply analyzing existing laris, we've crafted a flexible and responsive solution that fosters a sense of pride among vendors and captivates the hearts of all who experience the bustling atmosphere of Dhal Ni Pol.
