Dhal Ni Pol, an esteemed UNESCO Heritage precinct, reveals a state of neglect in its building facades, despite its significant cultural value. Faced with limited resources, a pragmatic approach was adopted to identify and restore inhabited houses within the area. The restoration work included addressing issues like cracks, plastering, carpentry, and coloring.  This effort has revitalized Gunwant Chowk and its surroundings, reflecting a renewed commitment to preserving heritage.

A participatory design initiative was undertaken, focusing on the restoration of 35 houses and 1579 square meters of building facades. The process was guided by a locally inspired color palette, harmonizing traditional shades of havelis with contemporary influences.

This blending of old and new elements has resulted in a captivating architectural expression, bridging the old and the new seamlessly.

transformation sequence

Upon our arrival in the vicinity, it became swiftly apparent that there existed vacant parcels with the potential to be rejuvenated into vibrant communal spaces. The Desai family's invaluable assistance facilitated the transformation of an erstwhile dump yard into a thriving, habitable plaza, an endeavor that lay at the heart of our intervention.

Our overarching vision was the creation of an open, adaptable expanse with multifunctional capacities, capable of evolving in accordance with diverse activities—a textured canvas eagerly awaiting the brushstrokes of local engagement. Anchored in the layout is the very foundation of a pre-existing haveli, the floor serving as an unobtrusive stage upon which various interactions unfold. The brick plinths, a testament to the past, stand as faint echoes of thresholds long since dissolved. The upper echelons of the Olta remain undisturbed, safeguarding the precinct from vehicular intrusion, reserving it solely for the community's enjoyment.

The design journey unfolded as a spirited dialogue between our team of specialists and the denizens of this distinctive locality. Given the distinctiveness of the environment, a conscious decision was made to harness and repurpose available materials, weaving a narrative of sustainability into every facet. The discarded stones, generously bestowed by Ahmedabad's esteemed stone industry clusters, found a second life as an artful mosaic upon the plaza's floor—a textured homage harmoniously intertwined with its surroundings.

As we delved into the technical intricacies, the plaza's mosaic emerged as a contemporary testament to ingenuity. The juxtaposition of the worn and the novel not only resonates aesthetically but also serves as a study in tactile contrasts. Each stone, meticulously placed, bears silent testimony to a thriving lineage of craftsmanship—a marriage of enduring traditions with a contemporary twist. The movable benches, a tour de force of resourcefulness, find their roots in time-honored wooden beams and the verdant presence of indigenous trees, their transportable nature fostering a sense of fluidity within the plaza's design.

As the final piece of the puzzle, perimeter plantations act as a verdant frame, softening the plaza's edges while underscoring its role as an urban oasis. This culmination stands as a testament to the harmonious synergy between the past and present, culled from the ingenuity of repurposed materials and guided by a collective vision that transcends the mundane. A thriving public haven has emerged, gracefully unfolding its embrace to a community that now enjoys the fruits of a collaboration that seamlessly wove together history, design, and sustainable innovation.
