FABRICA DE ARMAS

Project Details

THEME : REHABILITATION

CATEGORY: 3RD PRIZE

COLLABORATOR: FAS + OTIS

DATE: 2016

In a society obsessed with technological advancements and social networks, the proposal is to create a place free of technology, an analog retreat where obsolete activities can be reclaimed. We spend our lives in front of screens, obsessed with the latest online trends.

We have abandoned a part of our human nature to technology. There are increasing cases of people with problems in social relationships, individuals whose virtual life surpasses the real, and where the most important thing reduces to being "online," always connected.

In response to this situation, the building acts as a center for detoxification therapy, a place where you can disconnect from the world and engage in activities related to direct person-to-person interaction. No WiFi, no Facebook, no WhatsApp. The proposal presents a diverse space where people can return to the direct interactions of the past, recovering traditional values and activities.

"Don't be afraid, there's life beyond the internet."

URBAN INTERVENTION

Considering the context's symbolic significance, the proposal seeks to enhance the building's ties to its environment, achieving better integration and broader accessibility.

Strengthening the rapport with the Buhaira Gardens.Reviving the former Almonacid Street as a pivotal path for merchants crossing the project.
Reestablishing connections among courtyards via a continuous pathway. Enabling the flow between open courtyards and enclosed spaces as a spatial distribution network.
Introducing a fresh circulation route atop the walkable roof, extending from the Buhaira Gardens to Seville's historical core.
Removing adjacent constructions from the Factory while preserving architectural consistency in facades, roofing, and volumetric design.

WITHIN THE FACTORY

In a building originally designated for the steel industry, situated within a neighborhood classified as a "tertiary use area," a versatile structure is put forth where all sectors interact. The Open Factory can operate as an independent entity, accommodating the operation of the three traditional economic sectors: a primary sector encompassing livestock and agriculture, a revived secondary sector stemming from the steel factory, and the public utilization of services.

The building's objective is to function as a sustainable cycle wherein diverse disciplines amalgamate to achieve peak efficiency—a space of interactive influences open to various audience types. The intervention's nature is temporary and fleeting, founded upon the principle of "do it yourself." Building occupants have the opportunity to contribute to the design process and actively engage in the realization of their personal spaces.

The building will operate as an interactive ecosystem, adapting its configuration based on users' requirements. The proposal hinges on the design of fundamental activity cells. Through the on-site configuration of distinct basic units, more intricate and multifaceted systems will be achieved, fostering internal communities within the building itself.

So, why wait to craft your analog haven?

"MY ROOF IS YOUR ROOF". A NEW PERSPECTIVE OF SEVILLA. Thanks to the operable roof, we can now enjoy a previously undiscovered space that will become a public leisure area. A system of retractable awnings and seating areas will allow you to savor city views while being shielded from the intense Sevillian sun.

TRACE YOUR FOOD. Savor a meal with the assurance of natural ingredients. Our cafeteria utilizes dairy products sourced from our very own farm.

"OPEN UP, GET SOME FRESH AIR". In the former " Corral," the mechanism for opening the covers has been revitalized and amplified to establish an expansive open space with ventilation and natural light.

WORKING OUTSIDE? On the level northern roof, an outdoor workspace is provided, linked to the FabLab on the lower floor, sheltered by a metal pergola and textiles.

"YOUR OWN METALLIC CYCLE". Construct Your Framework The Arms Factory's activities have always been intertwined with metallurgy. The project's aim is to recover and harness this activity, establishing a system where users can fabricate their own micro spaces by combining metal components produced in the eastern wings of the building.

WORK AND CULTIVATE INSPIRATION.  Within the FabLab space, co-working zones, and areas for sharing information and consultation, creativity flows uninterrupted. It's a place where you can employ the necessary tools to bring your concepts to life.

EXHIBIT, EXPLORE AND LEARN.  Within the former bronze foundry, owing to its open configuration, a versatile zone is situated, adaptable for temporary events like exhibitions, biennials, or fairs.

THE ARTISAN'S DOMAIN.  Within the expansive Cathedral space (1759), an artisan village for skill development takes root. Each user can possess a transportable activity cell, adjusting to the environment that suits them best. Through the combination of cells and spatial units, an informal and organic community atmosphere emerges, wherein artisans from diverse fields can blend their expertise.

PROPOSE ACTIVITIES. Collaborate in organizing analog activities and workshops. Storytelling, natural drawing classes, reading workshops, photography and development courses, crafts and DIY, sewing, cooking... Dissemination and Outreach A perpetual exhibition of dormant heritage architecture serves to acquaint citizens with these edifices and their histories.

"FARM IN THE CITY"

In contrast to the robust industrial character of the eastern sector, a sector dedicated to primary and related activities is proposed. A return to the rural ethos within the urban fabric—a nod to the past. Activities tied to the land, flora, and fauna will take precedence, fostering values of sustainability and tradition for the succeeding generations.

PLANT AND CULTIVATE YOUR PERSONAL GARDEN. Through a straightforward system of benches and drip irrigation, users can plant their own seeds and learn how to nurture the growth of organic fruits and vegetables effectively.

"EMBRACE FARMING". Cows, pigs, horses, chickens... Certain animals will inhabit a designated section of the building for rehabilitation from injuries, breeding, mating, and food production.

AGAINTS OBSOLESCENCE.  Within the northern wing, a space is designated for repair, disassembly, and replacement of damaged items, reflecting a commitment to sustainability and conservation. This space grants used objects a second life and champions the avoidance of waste.
