DESIGN STUDIO 8

Project Details

THEME : DESIGN STUDIO 8

CATEGORY: URBAN INSERT

COLLABORATOR: ANANT

DATE: Jan - May 2023

Embarking on a transformative journey through the realm of urban architectural design, this course immerses students in the dynamic interplay between architectural creativity and social responsibility, with a particular focus on designing a sustainable and nurturing environment for a kids' orphanage within the urban landscape. Over the course of five comprehensive blocks, students will navigate the intricate layers of urban context, site analysis, and programmatic development, all while honing their skills to address the unique needs and challenges of orphanage design.

From understanding the contextual nuances of the surrounding urban fabric to envisioning innovative spatial solutions that foster growth and well-being, students will embark on a journey that seamlessly integrates architectural theory with practical application. Through hands-on exercises, including mapping the surrounding neighborhood, conceptualizing design solutions, and refining project narratives, students will emerge with a deep understanding of how architecture can positively impact the lives of vulnerable populations within the urban environment.

THE CONTEXT,
AN UPCOMING FUTURE

It’s 2030. India has surpassed China as the most populated country in the world and has become the third-largest economy.
The infrastructure and amenities have improved and extended over kilometers. Urban settlements are connected by an endless network of roads, railways, and bullet train tracks. Cities are cleaner and more organized.
Changes in construction policies have allowed high-rise built forms to emerge over the traditional fabric.
Despite all the big numbers, the development hasn’t been able to find an answer to the disparity and latent disintegration between the middle and the working class.
Countless village families have migrated to the metro city seeking better opportunities, hoping to survive the decline of the rural realm.
Unfortunately, the Promised Land doesn’t host them as expected.
They don’t hold degrees, barely know how to communicate, and have very little exposure to the rules and idiosyncrasies of the new society. They are out of the game and, many more than we would like to hear, end up homeless on the streets.

And with them, their kids.
Everybody knows, and no one seems to care.

STUDIO BRIEF ,a Government Orphanage

The premise is very clear.
No kids will be allowed in the streets.
No matter the context, or the circumstances.
If a child is found unattended in the streets, it will be immediately taken to the Childcare Department. The new institution aims to set an example in reintegration methods and a massive creator of inclusive opportunities.  The kids will stay till the time they become productive adults and can be allocated into society. Their formation will be oriented to serve society in a better way. That’s how they decided to
address a cursed problem.  By protecting and holding the talent of the next generation.
